When you get your iPhone on contract, it gets heavily discounted from the real price because the networks are guaranteed to get your money for the next year, 18 or 24 months. So they can afford to discount it from the real £500 price mark. But if you are not signing up for another contract - ie keeping the first contract bill - and just replacing the handset - that is going to cost you £500 - unless you have iPhone4 insurance
